New Galleries Open: "Forward Deployed" and "Afghanistan and Iraq"

Visitors are invited to join the staff of the National Museum of the Marine Corps on Sunday, October 6th for the much-anticipated opening of two new galleries. The "Forward Deployed" gallery covers Marine Corps actions from 1976 to 2001 while the "Afghanistan and Iraq" gallery covers events from 2001 to the present. There will be a ribbon cutting at 9:30 am. Major exhibits and artifacts include the M198 howitzer that fired the first shot in Desert Storm, multiple combat vehicles, a scene from Haiti depicting Operation Upholding Democracy, an F/A-18 Hornet fighter/attack jet that flew over Washington, DC after the 9/11 attacks, an evolution of combat medicine display, and an interactive recreation of an Iraqi street that visitors will walk through depicting combat room clearing, female engagement teams, and interactions with Iraqi citizens in support of the rebuilding of their communities.
