Description

Topic: Be Stroke Smart, Stay Stroke Smart

Presented by: Margaret Probst, Stroke Smart Coordinator & Data Analyst, Northern Virginia EMS Council

Strokes are the number one cause of long-term disability, striking 1 in 6 of us. Strokes can devastate life in an instant, but there is hope! Although effective medication to treat strokes has been available since 1996, studies show that up to 80% of stroke patients arrive at the hospital too late to receive that medication, simply because they don't recognize the emergency that is a stroke. In this presentation, you will learn the stroke signs, be confident in the immediate need to call 911 when you suspect a stroke and be inspired to share the lifesaving information with others.

Margaret Probst is the Northern Virginia EMS Council's Stroke Smart coordinator and data analyst, focused on expanding stroke education in the region and encouraging those experiencing the signs of stroke to immediately call 911. Margaret is also a nationally registered paramedic, enjoying the privilege of responding to 911 emergencies for the people of Maryland and Virginia as she has done for more than 20 years.
