Position Overview: Northern Virginia Food Rescue (NVFR) is seeking a dynamic and results-driven Director of Development to lead and execute the organization’s fundraising strategies. This individual will work collaboratively with the leadership team and board of directors to build relationships with donors, sponsors, and stakeholders, ensuring the financial sustainability of NVFR’s mission to reduce food insecurity and food waste in our community.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in nonprofit fundraising, donor cultivation, and strategic development, with a passion for advancing NVFR’s vision and programs.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Fundraising Strategy & Execution:
    1. Develop and implement a comprehensive annual fundraising plan, including major gifts, corporate sponsorships, grants, events, and individual giving campaigns.
    2. Set and achieve fundraising goals to meet or exceed annual revenue targets.
  2. Donor Cultivation & Stewardship:
    1. Build and maintain relationships with current and prospective donors, including individuals, foundations, and corporations.
    2. Create and manage a donor recognition program to enhance retention and engagement.
  3. Grant Development & Management:
    1. Create an annual grant tracking calendar and identify potential grants. 
    2. Manage grant reporting requirements and maintain compliance.
  4. Event Planning & Coordination:
    1. Oversee the planning and execution of fundraising events, such as Hunger is Scary, community outreach initiatives, and donor appreciation events.
  5. Communications & Marketing:
    1. Collaborate with the communications team to create compelling materials, including donor newsletters, impact reports, and digital campaigns.
    2. Promote NVFR’s brand and mission to increase public awareness and support.
  6. Board Engagement:
    1. Partner with the board of directors to support their fundraising efforts and provide regular progress updates.
    2. Serve as a staff liaison to the development committee.
  7. Data Management & Reporting:
    1. Utilize donor management software to track contributions, donor interactions, and fundraising metrics.
    2. Prepare reports for leadership to evaluate progress and inform decision-making.

Qualifications:

Required

  1. Minimum of 5 years experience in nonprofit development or fundraising, with a demonstrated ability to secure significant gifts and sponsorships.
  2. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate donors and stakeholders.
  3. Works collaboratively with the leadership team, board, staff, volunteers, and partner organizations.
  4. Applicants should possess the ability to exercise independent judgement and take initiative.
  5. Strong project management skills, including event planning and multitasking.
  6. Proficiency in donor management software (e.g., Salesforce, Bloomerang, Bonterra, or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  7. Commitment to NVFR’s mission and values.

Preferred

  1. Bachelor’s degree and/or advanced degree in nonprofit management, communications, business, or a related field.
  2. Fundraising Certification such as a CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) or other professional membership (AFP or VAFRE).
  3. Proficiency with grant writing, grant research, and grant management. 
  4. Knowledge of the Northern Virginia philanthropic community.

Work Environment & Benefits:

Hybrid work environment (3 days in the office, 2 days telework)

Competitive compensation

Opportunity to make a meaningful impact in reducing food insecurity and waste and reducing hunger in Prince William County. 

Compensation: $63,000-68,000 a year.
