Organizational Overview: Independence Empowerment Center (IEC) is a 501(c)3,

community-based, non-residential service and advocacy organization operated by and for

people with disabilities. It is one of seventeen Centers for Independent Living (CIL) in Virginia.

Our service area covers Prince William and Fauquier Counties, as well as the cities of Manassas

and Manassas Park. CILs advocate for the integration and inclusion of people with disabilities

into all aspects of society. IEC promotes disability rights, equal access, and full community

participation for persons with disabilities. In addition, IEC collaborates with individuals with

disabilities to maintain or take charge of their own lives and make their own choices and

decisions to be as self-sufficient as possible.

Position Summary: Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will oversee the

strategic and operational efficiencies of our programs and staff. This seasoned leader will not

only understand current trends regarding people with disabilities but will also have experience

in developing and implementing a successful fundraising plan. Experience in hiring and

managing staff is essential, and established collaborative partnerships with local community

groups is a plus. Above all, the executive director should be highly effective in a leadership role

that requires clear communication skills and decisiveness.

Key Functions and Responsibilities:

● Responsible for the strategic planning, organizing, and directing of IEC’s mission,

operations, and programs in accordance with Center for Independent Living (CIL)

principles and philosophy.

● Work closely with board directors and committees to assess and address issues affecting

IEC.

● Secure and oversee funding for IEC, including the development of proposals and grants.

● Serve as the face of IEC and participate in external events to increase visibility and

credibility and develop strategic partnerships to further increase community awareness

and expand programs.

● Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, the media and industry

associations.

● Work with IEC leadership to define and develop the organization’s advocacy agenda

based on organizational priorities and external landscape.

● Build and lead an effective, diverse team that is dedicated to fulfilling IEC’s mission

through extraordinarily successful programs, community engagement, and fundraising.

● Manage staff members and consumers whose experiences, cultures, and language

reflect the community served by IEC.

● Ensure that services and funding relationships are robust enough to meet or exceed

strategic goals and objectives.

● Coordinate and lead annual, monthly, and quarterly budget reviews, and oversee the

disbursement of funds within the board-approved limits.

● Maintain monthly and annual reports, including ensuring that records required for the

CIL PPR are accurate and submitted in a timely manner.

Executive Director Qualifications/Skills:

● Demonstrated leadership and management skills

● Demonstrated public-speaking skills

● Considerable knowledge of the function and philosophy of Independent Living Services

● Excellent written and verbal communication skills

● Ability to develop and write grants

● Knowledge of the civil rights movement for people with disabilities, including current

trends and issues, and federal civil rights discrimination on the basis of disability

● Develop funding from county, state, and federal government sources as well as

corporate and individual

● Proven success working with a board of directors

● Ability to understand and communicate the Independent Living Philosophy

● Creative critical thinking skills

● Collaborative, dynamic, and charismatic team player who enjoys being the public face of

an organization

● Sound knowledge of non-profit administration principles and management concepts

● Knowledge of Human Resources management and financial management

● Provide and communicate a clear direction for the organization’s future.

Education and Experience:

● Master’s Degree in business, public administration, social sciences, or related field

preferred; will give equal consideration to Bachelor’s Degree with relevant experience

● Extensive experience in a similar position or senior leadership role

● 5-7 years of management and/or supervisory experience, preferably with non-profit

organizations

● Experience in fiscally and administratively managing grants with complex county, state

and, or federal requirements.

● Experience in managing budgets
